A challenge to everyone:

As of today, impatience is a virtue: the preparations for the serial production of the road sports bike are fully underway. The entire K 1200 S team is literally chomping at the bit to present a power package of unique standing. Click here is see the specification sheet, which shows just what this promise is based on.

The design: openly sporty.

It's not just the specification figures of the K 1200 S which generate pure enthusiasm. This top level sports bike for the road also has the right visual appeal for sports enthusiasts: for example, the K 1200 S is available in two metallic paint finishes and two non-metallic multi color variations.

Extremely positive for you and for the environment.

Respect for the environment and maximum safety also come as standard in the K 1200 S. The catalytic converter and BMW Motorrad Integral ABS are also part of the basic technology of the K 1200 S.

The engine: the strongest heart of all time.

With a capacity of 1,157 cc, the K 1200 S sends an impressive 123 kW (167 bhp) at 10,250 rpm to the rear wheel. The maximum torque of 130 Nm at 8,250 rpm catapults this sports bike forward in seconds -- right from the start. Not surprising: after all, over 70% of the maximum torque is available at 3.000 rpm. How is so much power generated?

Among other things, this is a result of the valve action of the double camshaft engine, effected by light, rigid cam followers. The stroke/bore ratio of 59 x 79 mm guarantees a high degree of revving power characteristic of a short-stroke engine. Also, two balancer shafts in the horizontally split cylinder crankcase ensure outstanding mass compensation and a low level of vibration.

The gearbox: more bite than ever before.

The K 1200 S comes with an integrated 6-speed gearbox designed as a cassette gearbox -- unusual in a serial production bike.

CAN bus: transparent electronics.

The progressive wiring system of the K 1200 S is based on so-called CAN bus technology -- already familiar from the R 1200 GS. It offers more functions in a far simpler format and also allows a more detailed diagnosis of the entire electronics system.

BMW Motorrad Duolever: world premiere in the K 1200 S.

The new front wheel guidance "BMW Motorrad Duolever" and the optional electronically adjustable chassis will cause a few raised eyebrows. Here are the benefits
1. Maximum rigidity
2. Maximum braking and ride stability

What makes the Duolever principle an innovation?

It revolutionizes front wheel guidance for motorcycles. Since wheel guidance is separated from damping, an excellent feel for the road is developed, probably one of the most important requirements for sporty motorcycling on the road. With two combined triangular control arms and the wheel carrier, a four-link system is formed which ensures improved traction and comfort as compared to the Telelever.

ESA: innovation at the press of a button.

This abbreviation stands for greater comfort and flexibility on the road: Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA). The rider sets the spring pre-load tension and damping by pressing a button on the handlebars. It is optionally available.

Shaft drive: a drive train with plenty of strengths.

Narrower, lighter, slimmer -- this is what makes the newly designed shaft drive from BMW Motorrad so interesting. With the significantly slimmer EVO Paralever, the "jack-up" effect at load change is more effectively compensated. Another benefit: the shaft drive is completely maintenance-free, thus minimizing costs for maintenance and service from the start.

The K 1200 S is purebred sports bike. Designed to offer high performance: maximum agility, abundant power and unique riding precision.

The BMW K 1200 S: developed for the future.

The evidence: revolutionary front wheel guidance with two parallel longitudinal control arms instead of the usual telescope system, providing a highly sensitive response. Precision, rigidity and brake stability are the result. And the optional electronically adjustable chassis is a definite innovation in production motorcycle build.

The new front wheel guidance in combination with a whole range of intelligent solutions ensures perfect handling: the low engine installation, for example, gives a low centre of gravity. The entire chassis design with a wheel weight distribution of 50:50 and the low total weight also make for easy controllability of the K 1200 S in every situation.

Power in its most aesthetic form.

Somebody has to set the standards. In the sports segment, the K 1200 S takes on this role. Over 160 bhp (over 117 kW), a free revving engine and a competitive power-to-weight ratio at competitor level -- this leaves no more questions to be asked, nothing to be desired. The 1157 ccm 4-cylinder in-line engine (transversely installed and tilted 55° to the front) with integrated gearbox, together with the lightweight universal drive a modern synonym for perfection. The new power package is unusually narrow -- at the crankshaft, the width is comparable with that of 600 cc engines! This allows not only a narrow, streamlined profile, but also a high lean angle when cornering.

The new K 1200 S passes the test.

Have you heard of the unique "Nordschleife" loop on the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany with its 172 bends? They call this track Green Hell -- the most demanding country road in the world. After only a few laps on the new K 1200 S, the experienced race and test rider Markus Barth achieved a fantastic lap time of 7.57 minutes.

Test details: "Green hell"
Length: 12.92 miles (20.8 km)
Bends: 84 right-hand bends, 88 left-hand bends
Steepest climb: 17% on the rise to the airstrip
Lowest point: Breidscheid bridge, 1,050 feet (320 m)
Highest point: Hohe Acht, 2,034 feet (620 m)

Impressive figures. The official motorcycle lap record has set the benchmark in the motorcycling world for over 10 years: an amazing 7:49 minutes. Eight minutes is the magical mark for ambitious sports riders -- anyone who gets near it is amongst the best.

This circuit requires an all-out performance from both rider and motorcycle! Speed alone is not enough. What counts here is a perfect chassis, controllable engine power and safe braking power, as well as optimum knowledge of the course and a high level of ability. Experience it from the perspective of Markus Barth and accompany him on the new K 1200 S.

Here are Markus Barth's impressions:
"The K 1200 S really impressed me!" After just the first few metres, the pro racing biker is full of admiration. "This machine has incredible balance. Performance, handling and suspension settings all harmonize beautifully, giving a sense of security which I need on the Nordschleife," says Barth as he prepares for a "really fast" lap. "Control is everything!"

After a few laps, Barth speeds round the legendary Eifel circuit on the K 1200 S in an amazing time of 7:57 minutes. "That wasn't a perfect lap, but the potential is astounding. I think the controllability of the machine is the key to this enormous speed on such a demanding track."

"It was enormous fun!"
"You don't have to be a pro to have fun with this machine. A reliable chassis, supreme power, great ergonomics and an excellent sense of control "that's my idea of a good modern sports bike." Barth sums up calling the new bike, "A great overall package guaranteeing speed and riding fun in equal measure!"

The new K 1200 S is ready to go.

The Best Sports Bike for the Road. The first real four-cylinder sports bike by BMW Motorrad is ready for flight. The new K 1200 S will open up a new dimension in sports riding.

A large number of technical innovations will set new standards with regard to riding dynamics and handling. Like never before, power will be converted into thrust in absolutely every situation.

The first glimpse:
• More power than ever before. The power to weight ratio is 50% better than that of the R 1100 S.

• 1170 cc four-cylinder engine with transverse crankshaft. The narrowest engine of its class is mounted underneath the main frame and is tilted forwards to the extreme.

• Completely new front suspension: decoupling wheel control from suspension and damping, it also transfers the forces optimally into the frame structure. The result: steering precision second to none even when braking. A steering shock eliminator is not required thanks to the exceptional ride stability of the new K.

• Slim shaft drive design.

• Specifically constructed gearbox

• Electronically adjustable suspension.

The bike will be unveiled at the INTERMOT motorshow. We will keep you posted over the coming weeks with first test reports, technical details and the top highlights of the new K.
