All New. The R 1200 ST. The new R 1200 ST offers notable increased performance delivered by a 110 bhp engine matched at the same time with a reduction of approximately 44 lbs in the unladen weight versus the earlier R 1150 RS. This motorcycle will again be the yardstick for the competition in sport touring segment, which is dominated world wide by BMW Motorrad. The R 1200 ST is not a roadster with increased wind and weather protection, it is an independent, authentic Sports Tourer concept with a previously unequaled range of uses. From sprints on the riders favorite road to extended long-distance runs, this motorcycle is truly a thrill to ride. Engine The all-new flat-twin power unit featuring a balance shaft and displacing 1,170 cc presented for the first time in the R 1200 GS and later in the R 1200 RT is also the "heart" of the new R 1200 ST. Now featured in a Sport Touring bike, the engine offers even more power and torque increased to 110 bhp. As well as larger displacement, this extra power comes from an increase in engine speed by 500 rpm to 7,500 rpm, a different intake system, new silencers as well as modified camshafts also serving to boost engine output. The position of the silencer allows the rider to mount the motorcycle with side cases of the same size. This power pack is topped by an increase in the geometric compression ratio to 12.0:1 ensured by higher pistons. Featuring the BMS-K electronic engine management presented for the first time in the R 1200 GS this engine boasts both anti-knock control as well as separate oxygen sensors controlling the fuel/air mixture individually for each cylinder. The R 1200 ST carries over the technological leadership of the new Boxer Generation into the sport touring motorcycle range. As on the GS and the RT, this latest Generation of engine electronics combines automatic idle speed control with an automatic cold start function. Anti-knock control enables the motorcycle to run on lower fuel grades down to 95 octane without disadvantage for the rider. Transmission An all new development for the R 1200 GS and the R 1200 RT, the helical gear transmission weighing only 13 kg or 28.7 lb, is also featured in the R 1200 ST. Shifting gears smoothly and precisely, and featuring extra short gear travel between the individual gears the gearbox has been improved once again by detailed optimization of the shift mechanism. Frame The two-piece main/rear sub tubular steel space frame combines maximum stiffness with supreme strength. Naturally, it retains the weight saving truss structure already featured on the R 1200 GS, incorporating the engine as a load bearing unit. However, the R 1200 ST uses the same structural configuration as the R 1200 RT. New Telelever The BMW Motorrad Telelever is a combination of a telescopic fork and a swinging arm. A weight optimized version of this Telelever is used on the R 1200 ST. Reduction of the unsprung masses permits an even more sensitive response and is suited to a bike concept with sporting qualities and is indeed one of the conditions for precise handling and clear feedback. New Paralever The new BMW Motorrad EVO-Paralever combines the functions of rear wheel location and power transmission. It largely eliminates the forces induced by the shaft drive, which would otherwise lead to stiffening of the suspension when accelerating. The complete assembly is lighter and more rigid. The suspension strut is connected to the rear wheel bearing via progressive lever kinematics for the first time. This has clear advantages in terms of responsiveness and progressive damping. Suspension Front and Rear The suspension is managed by a single tube shock absorber (TDD) travel dependent damper in the rear, and a twin tube shock absorber in the front. Additionally the customer can order as an option BMW Motorrad's Electronic suspension adjustment (ESA), which is first and unique in the entire motorcycle world. This all new feature provides convenient operation of the front and rear suspension struts to adjust compression and rebound (rear) and rebound (front) in a range of 9 preset positions. This feature provides flexible suspension set up while effectively preventing any incorrect setting (until now only possible manually). At the touch of a button, the ESA suspension strut controls the damper setting (compression/rebound) depending on the pre-selected basic suspension setting. This centralized setting of the chassis is operated from the handlebar and makes nine different settings available using a matrix function. The rider can select from his or her style of riding (Sport/Normal/Comfort) and the load (solo/ with luggage / with luggage and pillion). Wheels For the new R 1200 ST, completely new cast aluminum 5-spoke wheels have been designed. The wheels are notable for their high rigidity in spite of their visually delicate design. The wheel dimensions are 3.5x17" at the front and 5.5x17" at the rear. The tire sizes 120/70 ZR 17 and 180/55 ZR 17. Brakes The brakes for the R 1200 ST consist of the well known EVO brake system. This brake system is also fitted with the BMW Motorrad Integral ABS in the part integral version as an option. This combination achieves maximum manageable decelerations with very low operating effort. The use of flexible steel hoses for the front brake ensures a precisely defined, stable braking pressure point and lower weight. The front brakes have 320 mm (12.6") dual-disc. The rear brake is 265 mm (10.4") with a single disc. Body
