The BMW R 1200 R - modern power, exclusive looks and a truly classic naked bike.

The most important highlights of the new R 1200 R versus the previous model R 1150 R:

Engine

On the R 1200 R, the new Boxer engine is at the same design level as the R 1200 RT on which it made its debut. On the R 1200 R it provides 80 kW/109 bhp, with maximum torque of 115 Nm as on the RT.

In comparison with the R 1150 R engine, the following improvements were achieved:

Transmission

The helical gearing of the R 1200 R has likewise been taken over from the R 1200 RT. The helical gearwheel design affords softer engagement and much smoother running. Further design improvements in transmission kinematics compared to the R 1150 R also improve gear shifts and ensure more precise locking of individual gears. Secondary ratio is 2.75 and hence shorter than on the RT, in line with the machine concept.

The transmission is exclusively equipped with a 6th short active running gear due to the substantially lower engine vibrations (balancing shaft).

Benefits:

Frame and suspension

Like its companion model in the Boxer range, with the exception of the R 1200 S, the R 1200 R has a two-part frame design with a partially self-supporting engine. Whilst the front frame section is identical to that of the R 1200 GS or RT, the rear tubular space frame was designed specially for the R 1200 R for low weight and a correspondingly light appearance at the back.

Wheel control is based on the Telelever and Paralever design already used on the other new Boxers. The suspension geometry was adapted specially to meet the requirements of the R 1200 R. Again as on the other new Boxers, this new geometry, together with the substantially reduced weight, makes a major contribution to the improved handling in comparison with its predecessor.

Brake System

At the front, the R 1200 R has two 320 mm (12.6 inches) diameter brake disks with floating bearings, decelerated by 4-piston fixed calipers. The rear 265 mm (10.2 inches) disk is braked with a 2-piston floating caliper. Pressure is transferred via low-loss steel-flex brake cables. The all new BMW Motorrad Integral ABS is offered as an option extra.

BMW Motorrad Single Wire System

Like the other new additions to the R- and K-series, the R 1200 R is equipped with the BMW Motorrad Single-Wire-System. This vehicle electrics system relays all vehicle-related data via a CAN bus to the various control systems and to the ZFE (central chassis electronics). The CAN bus is a data networking concept that links all control equipment via a common “signal path”. This technology simplifies the main cable bundle and enables more comprehensive diagnostics.

Benefits:

Instrument Panel

The instrument panel on the R 1200 R is essentially based on the new two cylinder model line. In addition to tachometer and revolution counter, the total mileage, trip 1 and 2, selected gear and time are also displayed. In addition, the fuel low level warning light comes on if the tank level drops below 1 gallon.

The instrument panel can be extended with an on-board computer as an option, to display further information in the existing array.

Ergonomic Design

The seat of the R 1200 R is optimized to suit the length of the leg arch. The narrow seat saddle section at the front affords exceptional floor reach and a more relaxed knee angle than with the R 1150 R.

The series seat is 800 mm (31.5 inches) in height with a leg arch length of 1,800 mm (70.8 inches). The R 1200 R can optionally also be equipped with a “low dual seat” — 770 mm (30.3 inches) — or a “high dual seat” — 830 mm (32.7 inches).

The handlebar position relative to the seat is largely unchanged from the R 1150 R.
