AMA/BMW National Adventure Riding Series (NARS)
McCloud, CA -- August 8-9, 2009
Mike Lingsch of McCloud Dual-Sport Adventures (pictured below) is hosting the upcoming AMA/BMW NARS event in McCloud, CA on August 8 and 9, 2009.
McCloud, nestled in the shadow of majestic Mt. Shasta (14,162 elev.), is a historic mill town with its quaint shops, bed & breakfast inns, and art galleries. Surrounded by hundreds of miles of seldom-ridden graded dirt logging roads, the volcanic activity of the Cascade Range has created unique geological formations of rivers, forests and alpine lakes that are most readily accessed by the discerning dual sport adventurer.
Going beyond the "run-of-the-mill" ride/camp weekend, McCloud DSA offers a more "civilized" touring adventure that isn't an all paved road ride, nor a skid plate, big air jolter, but a graded up and down hill off-road tour with just enough roughing it to know you've really been on an adventure.

McCloud NARS Ride Overview:
Ride structure:
70+ % dirt; mostly forest service or logging roads. 2 loops starting and ending at 1001 Squaw Valley Road in McCloud, CA.
- Day One 130 - 140 miles through the most gorgeous back-country in the western US.
- Day Two 50- 60miles to a nice lunch spot out in the country This will allow everyone in need of having to ride home early to do so at their leisure. Remaining riders will go for another loop of 50 70 miles.
- Ride fee is $175.00 (this includes a lot besides the entry fee).
- Starts Friday from 6 - 8pm with a light buffet style dinner of tacos and burritos, chips & salsa and soft drinks (included). This gives riders a chance to meet and socialize beforehand.
- As to Sat. morning, McCloud DSA expects most riders to stay at B&B's and therefore did not include breakfast for either day. Instead each morning, riders will find a catered buffet
(included), not intended for breakfast, but rather to make up your own lunch for the ride. It will be substantial, offering everything riders could possibly need for a good day's ride.
- At the end of day riders will find a nice sit down dinner (included) offering prime rib or Cajun chicken prepared by a Cajun chef.
- All types of bike brands and sizes welcome; however all bikes must be street legal and in ride-ready shape / prepared well.
- Riders meet at 8AM on Saturday, August 8 at McCloud Cafe which is at the entrance to McCloud's historic golf club, created by the Hearst family in 1923. The address is 1001 Squaw Valley Road in McCloud, CA.
- GPS down loads and maps are available Friday night or Saturday before the ride.
- There will be a Saturday after-ride focus group discussion for an hour or so to talk about the day's adventure and each rider's experience; also to share thoughts and to plan for the following day's ride and future rides in the area.
- Sunday morning; again a catered buffet to make up rider’s own lunch for the ride (included).
- Weather is expected to be dry and hot, but near Mount Shasta at 14,000+ feet in elevation, there is a micro-climate that is cooler and wetter. Therefore riders should prep for flexible weather conditions. Riders should especially make sure to bring hydration packs and bring extra fluids before heading out each day.
- Make sure to bring your camera, this is a very scenic ride.
- Hotels, B&B and camping nearby in the towns of McCloud, Shasta and Dunsmuir www.mccloudchamber.com/ ; www.mtshastachamber.com/visitor/ ; http://dunsmuir.com/index.php
- If you plan to camp, Dance Country RV Park is near by.
- Street legal dirt tires are not a necessity but always strongly recommended. After all, dirt is a lot more fun with better traction.
